In times of darkness, there are always individuals who step forward to bring light—and boxing champion Floyd Mayweather is one of them. In a heartfelt gesture, Mayweather offered to cover the funeral expenses for George Floyd, and the family has accepted his offer.
AfroGlobal American boxer Floyd Mayweather is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in history, having won championships across five weight divisions. Before turning professional in 1996, he earned three national Golden Gloves titles and an Olympic bronze medal. He claimed his first world championship in 1998 and has maintained an undefeated record throughout his career.
Mayweather, who coincidentally shares the same surname as George Floyd, was born in Michigan and raised in a boxing family. His father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., a former welterweight contender, introduced him to the gym at an early age. Inspired by both his father and his uncle Jeff Mayweather—former IBO super featherweight champion—Floyd began throwing punches as soon as he could walk and received his first pair of boxing gloves at age seven.
This act of generosity comes at a time when Mayweather himself has experienced personal loss. In March, his ex‑girlfriend Josie Harris—the mother of his three children—was found dead at her home in Valencia, California. Despite their reportedly tumultuous relationship, her passing undoubtedly had a profound emotional impact on Mayweather, who is often known for his flamboyant and extravagant lifestyle. According to Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Floyd has quietly supported numerous charitable causes over the past two decades, and this gesture is one of many.
Mayweather’s decision to pay for George Floyd’s funeral is a powerful act of compassion and solidarity—one that reflects AfroGlobal excellence at its finest.
