The World Travel Awards Africa 2016, named and awarded Mombasa as Africa’s Leading Destination. The ceremony took place on Saturday 16th April in Zanzibar, Tanzania and the other nominees included Cape Town, South Africa; Durban, South Africa; El Gouna, Red Sea, Egypt; Johannesburg, South Africa; Luxor, Egypt; Marrakech, Morocco; Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt; Victoria Falls, Zambia; and Zanzibar, Tanzania. Former honourees include Marrakech in 2015, 14-time winner Cape Town, and two-time winner Sharm El Sheikh in 2007 and 2004.

Mombasa is Kenya’s second largest city after the capital Nairobi, a regional hub and historical trading centre located on the east coast of the country,
